Personal care aides assist elderly and disabled clients with non-medical activities of daily living (ADLs)-- common activities required to live safely and comfortably at home. These include bathing, grooming (hair, nails, etc.), dressing, toileting, meal preparation, light housekeeping, socializing and companionship, making medical appointments, and coordinating transportation to and from appointments.
Home health aides do many of the same tasks as personal care aides but are also trained to support clients with basic healthcare-related tasks. These can include reminding clients to take medications or changing non-sterile bandages.
While the core job duties will be the same no matter which home care agency you work for, the type of support you get from your employer can really vary. Many agencies offer only the bare minimum in training. Many provide no sick or vacation time. And many will expect you to operate with little information or on-the-job support.
